A long-awaited family reunion in Canada turned into a tragedy for a family from Jalandhar after Gursimran Kaur (19) lost her life in a workplace accident at Walmart in Halifax on October 20. Gursimran, who had moved to Canada with her mother Mandeep Kaur two years ago from Guru Nanak Nagar, Suranussi, was employed at Walmart alongside her mother.
The family’s dream was for Gursimran’s father, Rajinder Singh, who has lived in the UK for the past 16 years, to join them in Canada. The reunion was cut short by this tragic incident. Rajinder returned from the UK to Delhi to process his visa for Canada but is unable to see his daughter one last time.
Gursimran’s uncle, Gurvinder Singh, who raised her in her father’s absence, shared emotional memories of the young woman, describing her as intelligent and caring. Having passed Class XI in 2022, Gursimran moved to Canada with hopes for a brighter future. Gurvinder expressed the family’s heartbreak, saying, “We still do not know how it all happened… we have full faith in the investigation by the Canadian police and hope for justice.”
He also acknowledged online reports of a fundraiser for the family but emphasized that their primary loss was the life of Gursimran, the “cute, little, dreamy girl” whose absence has changed their lives forever.
